ABOUT THE ARTISANS

Pachangara is a community in the province of Oyon, Peru, with a textile workshop that first opened in 2008. The idea was to help mothers who wanted to contribute to their family's finances. They specialize in weaving throws, bags, and accessories that can be sold at regional fairs. They work with alpaca and sheep's wool, on their own or blended. Most of the colors they use come from natural dyes. Pachangara is known for their brightly colored and festive apparel.

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

Loom weaving is an important part of Andean culture. Possibly dating from 8000 B.C. in the Ancash region, this traditional technique requires great skill and knowledge that is passed down from generations. Depending on the region, designs often reflect nature and animals, with some reproducing ancient stories or abstract geometric patterns.

After carding and cleaning the wool, the thread is spun on a traditional backstrap or foot-powered loom. Natural dyes are often made of minerals, herbs, and even insects. It takes about 1 week to complete a blanket like this one.

By buying handloom products from Peru, you empower indigenous people to make a living, and keep the traditional art alive. You also enable women, the weavers, in their communities to own income.
